Nobody Is Doing Anything About Cyber Security

Insiderlogo3At the INSIDER we’ve been saying this for years. The adoption of even basic cyber security actions in the industrial space is very low. Many companies believe that they are “pretty safe” because they are relatively obscure. But I recall a conversation with the head of IT of a regional potato chip company about 7 or 8 years ago: “I never thought anybody would cyber attack us. We make potato chips, for God’s sake.”

Honeywell, which has maintained a very high emphasis on cyber security in the industrial environment for over a decade now, sponsored a report by LNS Research on adoption of cyber security practices.

Here’s the press release with the study’s findings. All we can say is, “Wake up, people!”

The issue has gone beyond lack of knowledge. As Joy Ward, Spitzer and Boyes LLC’s director of research says, if you put together a good intellectual argument, and nobody is buying, you are looking at high emotional barriers. She recommends doing some serious qualitative research to determine what those barriers are, so that the intellectual argument can be adjusted and become effective.

Either that, or we need to prepare for a cyber disaster of enormous proportions.

 

HONEYWELL SURVEY SHOWS LOW ADOPTION OF INDUSTRIAL CYBER SECURITY MEASURES

Almost two thirds of surveyed companies don’t monitor for suspicious behavior

HOUSTON, December 6, 2017 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today released a new study showing industrial companies are not moving quickly to adopt cyber security measures to protect their data and operations, even as attacks have increased around the globe.
The survey – Putting Industrial Cyber Security at the Top of the CEO Agenda – was conducted by LNS Research and sponsored by Honeywell. It polled 130 strategic decision makers from industrial companies about their approach to the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), and their use of industrial cyber security technologies and practices. Among the findings were:
• More than half of respondents reported working in an industrial facility that already has had a cyber security breach.
• 45% of the responding companies still do not have an accountable enterprise leader for cyber security.
• Only 37% are monitoring for suspicious behavior.
• Although many companies are conducting regular risk assessments, 20% are not doing them at all.
“Decision makers are more aware of threats and some progress has been made to address them, but this report reinforces that cyber security fundamentals haven’t been adopted by a significant portion of the industrial community,” said Jeff Zindel, vice president and general manager, Honeywell Industrial Cyber Security. “In order to take advantage of the tremendous benefits of industrial digital transformation and IIoT, companies must improve their cyber security defenses and adapt to the heightened threat landscape now.”
The study suggests these three immediate actions for any industrial organization to capture the value of the new technologies:
1. Making industrial cyber security part of digital transformation strategies;
2. Driving best practice adoption across people, processes and technology, from access controls to risk monitoring, and tap external cyber expertise to fill gaps
3. Focusing on empowering leaders and building an organizational structure that breaks down the silos between IT and OT.
“Cyber security needs to be part of every CEO’s agenda to ensure the effective, immediate and long-term deployment of strategies and technologies such as IIoT,” said Matthew Littlefield, president and principal analyst, LNS Research. “In short, in order for a business to succeed on its digital transformation journey, it needs to succeed with industrial cyber security.”

Women in Automation- Emerson Exchange Zooms In

The recent Emerson Exchange did an excellent job of showing the range of how women and female insight can add to the automation industry. The two women who starred, Robyn Benincasa, the founder of WorldClass Teams as the keynote speaker and Janeen Judah, the President of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, the Women in Innovation speaker, gave listeners much to learn from and use in their careers.

Emerson started their recent meeting with one of the most exciting and challenging keynote speakers I have seen in a long time. Benincasa is a firefighter and adventure racer with nothing to do with automation, except that she had some of the best advice to members of the industry. Yes, we’ve all endured keynote speeches given by well-meaning but apparently automation-clueless speakers trying very hard to reach their audience. This speaker not only reached her audience but gave it marvelous advice and direction. Her message was one of cooperation, not competition. Too often we have been fed the message that life is about competition but not from this speaker. Through wonderful examples of her experiences adventure racing around the globe in some of the most challenging environments on earth, Benincasa showed how working together is a much stronger strategy than all-out competition. She also exhorted the crowd to work to win, not just NOT lose. This requires a different way of thinking and is a good lesson in today’s accounting-driven world.

Then Emerson continued the good words from the women’s side with a luncheon speech by Janeen Judah, the president of SPE, and a working petroleum engineer. While her message was not as physically exuberant, it was still both challenging and in the same vein — cooperation is the way for everyone to progress. She gave some sterling advice on how thinking of colleagues and doing well for them can come back to do well for everyone.

In summation, both women brought the same message to the Emerson crowd. Cooperation and what sociologist would consider traditionally female forms of interaction are healthier and ultimately more productive for individuals and companies. Is it possible that we are getting this type of message now because enough women are in the workplace and feel comfortable interacting and managing as women, not just women in steel boots? Whatever the reason, it is a healthy movement. Kudos for Emerson for hosting these two wise women and their messages!

A Legend Passes: Dick Morley Died Today

I am sorry to report that Dick Morley passed away quietly in his New Hampshire care facility earlier this evening. A legend has passed. May Dick Rest in Peace, and thanks for the memories.

Now Dick can be back with Shirley, whose death a few years ago broke his spirit and his health.

Dick was the most important inventor of the last 50 years of the 20th century. Very few people know that, which is a shame. He never wanted fame, he only wanted to invent new things.

I remember with fondness his “Geek Pride Day” events at the Barn in New Hampshire.

I have been proud to call Dick Morley my friend, and one of my mentors.

Blake Moret Finally Gets the Cherry

After a year of being CEO, the Rockwell Automation Board has finally named Blake Moret to the post of Chairman. He, of course, succeeds Keith Nosbusch in that role, as he succeeded Nosbusch as President and CEO.

Rockwell will continue to have an independent “lead director,” Donald R. Parfet, who said: “Since Blake became CEO and joined the board in July 2016, he has demonstrated that he is exceptionally well-qualified to lead the company and the board. Blake is a champion of the company’s high performance culture with an extraordinary ability to inspire and connect with customers, employees, partners and the leadership team. The board is confident that this leadership structure will continue to drive the company’s success.”

Moret has already done some interesting things, like the acquisition of Maverick Technologies.. The jury is still out on that one.

It is always interesting to watch a major company CEO finding his feet and getting going.
