At the ARC Forum last week, I ran into two old friends who have a new idea, and are out flogging it. Dr. Peter Fuhr, former co-founder of Apprion, and now at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Hesh Kagan, formerly of Foxboro, have something cool.
Both Peter and Hesh have been involved heavily in wireless, and the wireless wars, so it isn’t a complete surprise that they have gone “beyond wireless” in using RF energy to sense a large number of things. They’ve located cell phones hidden in prisons from “a considerable standoff distance” and they can display the source of hidden RF signals. They can find lost or rogue RF instrumentation, thermal fields, steam jets, and chemical leaks. These are very cool, and a noninvasive way to do this is literally Star Trek. Imagine a cross between a tricorder and Geordi LaForge’s bionic glasses.
Here’s a quick video from them that shows some of what they can do.
