Is the Internet of Things Going to be a Security Nightmare? #pauto #arcforum #manufacturing

February 10, 2014 by Walt Boyes

Okay, okay, so this is cool, this IoT, Industrial Internet, Pervasive Sensing, or what the heck you want to call it.
But everybody who was asked about security at the ARC Forum Press Conferences responded with mostly motherhood statements (with the distinct exception of Nobuaki Konishi, of Yokogawa). Are we all going to stick our heads in the sand until something worse than the Target or Neiman Marcus hacks nail us all? (The Target hack certainly was a Machine-to-Machine or Internet of Things hack…)
Are we really comfortable with giving IP addresses to everything, knowing that the attack surface through devices thus expands exponentially?
Does anybody really think IoT is going to make the manufacturing enterprise SAFER or MORE SECURE?
If you really think that, show me how.
