The Chuck Knight Legacy

May 22, 2006 by Walt Boyes

Emerson was founded in 1890 but it wasn’t until Chuck Knight took over that Emerson really started to roll. In fact, as Steve Sonnenber was speaking, he seemed to have just a little difficulty remembering that the capo di tutti capi is David Farr now, not Chuck. Emerson Process Management is about 25% of total sales for Emerson Inc.
From the department of “how ironic…”
“ABB buys a company ans next week, everybody knows they’re now ABB,” Sonnenberg said, noting that Emerson thought that this “overbranding” strategy worked, so they did the same thing. As I have pointed out, the strategy worked for Emerson but it so did not work for ABB that ABB people have taken to putting the old logos on the back of their business cards.
