Ultrasonic Flow Measurement (Part 1 of 3) by David W Spitzer and Walt Boyes

Ultrasonic level measurement sensors emit ultrasonic energy towards the material and measure the remnants of the energy that is reflected from the material surface. One sensor emits ultrasonic energy while a second sensor receives the remnants. Some designs package both sensors in the same physical device so it may appear to be a single sensor.

Flowmeter Turndown Overkill: Is 10,000-to-1 Really Better Than 100-to-1? by David W Spitzer

It would be fair to say that the overwhelming majority of instrument suppliers make valid claims about the instruments they sell.  For example, a supplier may claim that his flowmeters perform within a specified accuracy such as 0.5 percent of flow rate.  The supplier has presumably tested the flowmeter and found that its performance falls within this specification.  The user can then decide whether this particular flowmeter meets the needs of the application.

Farther along in the conversation, the supplier may mention that the flowmeter has a turndown of 1000:1.  Again, the claim may be factual and supported by test data.  But, think about what 1000:1 turndown really means.  For example, magnetic flowmeters typically have a nominal maximum velocity of 10 meters per second.  A turndown of 1000:1 describes flowmeter operation between velocities of 0.01 and 10 meters per second.

Which of the following flowmeters can measure both forward and reverse flow?

  1. Differential pressure
  2. Magnetic
  3. Turbine
  4. Ultrasonic
